About SOS

Students Over Starvation (SOS) is a student-led campaign fighting to ensure no student has to choose between academic success and basic nutrition during exam season. Founded by Olivia Andrews, Joel Brandt, Tate Hartley, Renn Petryk, and Kaylie Walker, SOS is focused on closing a critical gap in food access at UBC Okanagan.

Exam periods are some of the most stressful times in a student’s life. With long hours and high pressure, many students skip meals or struggle to afford nutritious food. While programs like PICNIC and other campus supports exist, many become limited or unavailable during exams, exactly when students need them most.

SOS is advocating for a free or low-cost food program that operates during midterms and finals. This is not just about convenience. It is about student health, safety, and success. Research and real experiences on campus show that lack of nutrition during exams can lead to serious consequences, including students fainting due to not eating.

We are working with campus partners like PICNIC, Campus Wellness, the Student Learning Hub, and the Students’ Union Okanagan to push for real, lasting change. By building partnerships and amplifying student voices, we are holding decision makers accountable.

Our vision is clear. Food support during exams should not be optional. It should be a standard part of campus life.
